The ICC - International Certificate of Competence is the boat licence required by a UK Citizen or Residents to operate a recreational vessel in overseas waters. The ICC cannot be issued to anyone under the age of 16.

Evidence of residency is required for non-nationals this is usually a photocopy of a driving licence, utility bill, Council Tax bill, bank statement or similar.

How to obtain the ICC

Sea Master ICC International Certificate of Competence

  • Taking a test of your ability and theoretical knowledge here at the Sea Master RYA training center.
  • Passing an RYA Training Course: Day Skipper Practical, Power Boat Level 2 or Motor Cruising Helmsman's Course.
  • Taking a course that provides training and finishes off with the assessment.

On successful completion of your assessment you then apply to the RYA to issue the ICC Licence.

The assessment or training can either be done on your own boat or on a school boat.

ICC Asessement

The ICC assessment is a half day practical and theory test in the following categories:

  • Sail up to 24 metres
  • Power up to 10 metres
  • Power over 10 metres

Cost of Assessment

  • £120.00 on your own boat
  • £250.00 on a school boat

ICC Practical Power Training up to 10 metres

A 2 day course to learn the required standard of boat handling and theoretical knowledge. Expect some theory homework!

Cost of Course

  • 1 person £450
  • 2 person £375 p.p.
  • 3 person £300 p.p.

Our Sea Master school boat is a Valiant V-570, 4 stroke Mercury 150, powerboat.

Successful completeion of this course entitles you to apply for an ICC Power up to 10 metres.

ICC Practical Power Training over 10 metres

A 3 day course on the school or private boat to learn the required standard of boat handling and theoretical knowledge required for this size of vessel. Expect some theory homework!

  • 1 person £ 750
  • 2 person £ 480 p.p.
  • 3 person £ 360 p.p.

Your boat must be of a suitable standard and crew may be required.

Cost of Course school boat

  • 1 person £ 1680
  • 2 person £ 960 p.p.
  • 3 person £ 680 p.p.

Our Sea Master school boat is a 2005 Sealine S42 Motor Cruising Yacht.

Successful completeion of this course entitles you to apply for an ICC Power over 10 metres.

ICC Practical Sail Training up to 24 metres

A 3 day course on the school boat to learn the required standard of boat handling and theoretical knowledge required for this size of vessel. Expect some theory homework!

  • 1 person £ 1440

Our Sea Master school boat is either a 2007 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey, 42 i or a 2007 Gran Soleil 40.

Successful completeion of this course entitles you to apply for an ICC Sail up to 24 metres.

ICC Theory Preparation

A half or full day theory training session for those who already have the practical ability to achieve the required standard for the ICC certificate.

If no theory knowledge exists at all it is recommended to take a theory course.
